What Is Masking Fluid and Why Use It?
Masking fluid, also called liquid frisket or masking latex, is a liquid rubber solution that you apply to watercolor paper before painting. Once dry, it forms a thin, rubbery film that repels water and paint. After your painting is dry, you peel off the mask to reveal the pristine white paper underneath.
This simple concept solves one of watercolor’s biggest challenges: preserving white areas. Unlike oil or acrylic painting where you can add white paint on top, watercolor relies on the paper itself as the lightest value. Once you paint over an area, getting back to clean white is extremely difficult. Masking fluid lets you paint freely across masked areas without worrying about protecting highlights, then remove the mask to reveal perfect white shapes.
Types of Masking Fluid
Masking fluid comes in several forms, each suited to different applications.
Liquid Masking Fluid (Bottled)
The most common type comes in small bottles with a screw cap. It has a thick, slightly gummy consistency and is applied with a brush, pen, or shaper tool. Some brands add a tint, usually yellow or blue, so you can see where you have applied it. This is the most versatile type and what most artists use.
Masking Fluid Pens
These have masking fluid loaded into a pen-like applicator with a fine tip. They are excellent for thin lines, text, and precise details without needing a separate application tool. The trade-off is less control over line width compared to using different brush sizes.
Masking Tape and Film
For straight edges and large areas, low-tack masking tape or artist’s tape provides clean borders without any drying time. Masking film, a clear adhesive sheet, can be cut to any shape with a craft knife. These are useful for architectural subjects or geometric compositions.
Essential Tools for Masking
Never apply masking fluid with your good painting brushes. The latex will ruin brush hairs permanently, bonding to them even after washing. Instead, use dedicated tools.

Old or inexpensive brushes work well if you coat them in soap first. Rub the brush across a bar of soap before dipping into the masking fluid. The soap creates a barrier that prevents the latex from bonding to the hairs, making cleanup much easier.

How to Apply Masking Fluid: Step by Step
Step 1: Plan Your White Areas
Before opening the masking fluid, decide which areas of your painting need to stay white. Common candidates include sunlit highlights on water, white flowers, light-coloured buildings against a dark sky, sparkle effects on water surfaces, and any very light shape surrounded by darker values.
Sketch your composition lightly in pencil first. This gives you a clear guide for where to apply the mask.
Step 2: Prepare the Paper
Apply masking fluid to completely dry paper. Any dampness will cause the mask to bond too deeply into the paper fibres, making it impossible to remove cleanly later. The paper should also be free of dust or oil from your hands.
Paper choice matters significantly for masking. Cotton watercolor paper handles masking fluid much better than cellulose. Cotton fibres are stronger, so the mask peels off cleanly without tearing the surface. Cellulose paper is more prone to surface damage during mask removal, especially with cheaper papers.
Heavier weights like 300gsm paper also perform better because the thicker sheet resists the pulling force of removing dried masking fluid.
Step 3: Apply the Mask
Shake the bottle gently to mix the fluid, but avoid creating air bubbles. Dip your tool and apply in smooth, confident strokes. Avoid going over the same area repeatedly while the first layer is still wet, as this can create uneven thickness and messy edges.
Apply a sufficiently thick layer. Too thin and paint will seep under the mask. Too thick and it takes much longer to dry and can be harder to remove. A single, even coat is usually perfect.
Step 4: Let It Dry Completely
This is critical. Masking fluid must be completely dry before you paint over it. Drying time varies from 10 to 30 minutes depending on thickness, humidity, and temperature. In Sri Lanka’s humid climate, allow extra drying time. The mask should feel dry and slightly rubbery to a light touch. Do not use a hair dryer, as heat can cause the mask to bond too aggressively to the paper.
Step 5: Paint Over the Masked Areas
Once dry, paint normally. You can apply flat washes, gradient washes, wet-on-wet techniques, or any other approach right over the masked areas. The mask will repel the paint completely.
This is wonderfully freeing. Instead of carefully painting around small white shapes, you can sweep your brush broadly across the entire area, knowing the mask is protecting what needs to stay white.
Step 6: Remove the Mask
Wait until your painting is completely dry before removing the mask. Attempting removal while the paper is damp will damage the surface. Use a clean finger, a rubber cement pickup eraser, or the edge of a dried piece of masking fluid itself to peel the mask away. Start at a corner or edge and peel gently.
Advanced Masking Techniques
Multi-Layer Masking
You can apply masking fluid, paint a layer, let it dry, then apply more masking fluid to preserve that layer while painting darker values on top. This technique lets you build up complex compositions with multiple layers of preserved values.
For example, in a forest scene: mask where the brightest sunlit leaves will be, paint a light green wash over everything, let it dry, then mask the medium-value leaves, and paint a darker green over the remaining areas. When you remove all the masks, you have three distinct value levels with clean edges.
Masking for Splatter Effects
Dip an old toothbrush in masking fluid and flick it across the paper to create random small dots of mask. Paint over the entire area, then remove the mask to reveal a field of white speckles. This creates beautiful effects for starry skies, snow, flower fields, or sparkling water.
Combining Masking with Wet-on-Wet
Apply masking fluid to create hard-edged white shapes, then surround them with wet-on-wet painting for soft, flowing colour around crisp white highlights. This contrast between soft painted edges and sharp masked edges is visually stunning and would be nearly impossible to achieve without masking fluid.
Masking Over Dry Paint
Masking fluid can be applied over previously painted and dried areas, not just bare paper. This lets you preserve a mid-tone value while adding darker layers. Just be aware that removing the mask from painted surfaces sometimes lifts a small amount of pigment, particularly with staining pigments on cellulose paper.
Paper and Masking Fluid Compatibility
Not all papers work equally well with masking fluid. The texture of your paper affects how the mask applies and removes.
Hot press (smooth) paper gives the cleanest masked edges because the fluid sits on a flat surface. Cold press works well for most masking applications but will have slightly textured edges where the fluid fills the paper’s dimples. Rough paper creates very irregular mask edges, which can be desirable for organic shapes but frustrating for precise work.

Common Masking Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Mask Will Not Peel Off

If it is stuck, try rubbing gently with a rubber cement eraser. As a last resort, dampen the area slightly and try again, but this risks paper damage.
Paper Surface Tears During Removal
This happens most often with thin cellulose paper. Switch to heavier cotton paper. Also check that you are not pulling the mask upward; peel it sideways, parallel to the paper surface, for the gentlest removal.
Paint Seeps Under the Mask
Either the mask layer was too thin or it was not fully dry before painting. Apply a slightly thicker layer next time, and always test dryness with a light touch before painting over masked areas.
Hard White Edges Look Unnatural
This is actually a feature of masking, not a bug. Masked areas create very crisp, hard edges. Once the mask is removed, you can soften edges by running a clean damp brush along the boundary. This gives you the best of both worlds: the freedom to paint over masked areas, then the control to soften edges selectively afterward.
When Not to Use Masking Fluid
Masking fluid is powerful but not always the best solution. For very small highlights like a tiny sparkle in an eye, lifting with a damp brush or using white gouache is simpler. For large areas of white space, it is often easier to simply paint around them with careful wet-on-dry technique.
Masking fluid really shines when you have multiple small or complex white shapes that would be tedious to paint around, or when you want the freedom to apply loose, expressive washes without worrying about preserving specific areas.
